Pants on fire - or is that a burning cassock?

What does it say for and about the credibility of the Catholic Church when one of its Archbishops lies through his teeth on the witness stand?

He responded 193 times that he could not recall the answers to questions put to him.

If you believe his memory forgettery was and still is that bad, I have a bridge in Brooklyn, NYC I'd like to sell you.  Cash only, please, and in small bills.  And no - it won't come with a blessing.

The Catholic Church should erect a stake for this POS. That would send a message. I recall a statement about Admirals....

I would not be that man for any amount of money. He may evade man's punishment for his crimes, but he has multiplied them in God's eyes.

Who the heck does he think he is, Hillary Clinton?

I agree with tweels statement above - God will supply the final justice and everyone who participated or protected the child abuser will face his/ her consequences.

I think focusing on Catholic abusers as especially bad is also wrong. I don't think the child having a tool waved in his face thinks ' This sucks but at least this guy isn't a priest - that would be REALLY bad'.

ITS THE SAME EXPERIENCE FOR THEM, regardless of their abuser's station. The Catholic church has to own up to past priest abuses, but remember, this religion makes up 1.1 BILLION of the world population. There is going to be some bad apples in there.

I seem to remember I don't recall defense used in the Clinton impeachment hearings.

Anon 6:32 AM, you need to go look at what was happening in the RCC's establishments in Ireland and Australia, as well as the U.S.

This was not "a few bad apples". This was institutionalized cruelty over decades and generations. This was organizational cover-ups of rapes of children, and, in the cases of Australia and Ireland, enslavement and even murder.

"A few bad apples"? Not even hardly.

(Peter, came by to see if you had this story.)

@Gerry - Hillary, not Bill. Whitewater (among other occasions), not impeachment.

Anon 6:32 am here - point taken, but child abuse by Catholic priests is no worse than those abused by non Catholics - that was the point I was trying to make above.

Regardless of who did the abusing and who helped cover it up, I'm sure that God will give them their just dues. Child abuse is a despicable crime.

My question is: why are the parents putting up with this situation?

When the parents make it common for abusive priests (and their enablers) to have a timely meeting with the Lord, the problem will mostly go away.

Peter,

Here is the full text of the deposition:

http://www.archspm.org/wp-content/uploads/2014/04/158765rcarlson05232014_Full_Redacted.pdf

Also, here is a response by the Twin Cities Archdiocese to the information given in your links:

http://www.archspm.org/archspm_news/archdiocese-st-louis-addresses-archbishop-carlson-deposition-controversy/

Short version: it was something of a hatchet job. If you read the text and compare it to the edited video, this is clear. Very nasty bit of work. Mind you, I'd argue that whether or not a person was a mandatory reporter is rather morally irrelevant in the case of a child molester; seems to me it's the responsibility of any reasonable adult to report such a person to the cops ASAP. Still, this particular issue isn't nearly so bad as it seems to be. The MSM does NOT like the Catholic Church, as I'm sure you're aware.
